Rovio revenue rises as Angry Birds maker lures more players with marketing spend

Video game developer Rovio has just outed its half year financial reports reporting 71.8 million euros ($81.7 million) in 2nd quarter beating analyst estimates and 137.5 million Euros ($152.6 million) for the entire half of this year thanks to an increase in players of its mobile games as the company spent significantly on sales and marketing efforts.

22.9 million Euros was spent on user acquisition investments representing 35% of its gaming revenue as the company which went public last year makes more efforts to lure users for its mobile games to increase slowing revenues.

Rovio's Angry Birds movie which contributed significantly to is financials has seen a decline although the number of active players for its games rose higher than analysts expectations.





The drop in the movie income was nevertheless expected as most of the revenue from that segment came during Q2 last year when hype and adaptation of its title was much more intense. Expecting between 260 million Euros - 300 million Euros in 2018 total revenue, The Angry Birds maker still maintains its full year outlook for revenue and profitability as its continues to make efforts on increasing its mobile gaming ecosystem.

"Rovio Games business will focus on continuing development of its live game portfolio according to the Games as a Service strategy, profitable user acquisition and development of new games. The user acquisition investments are expected to be around 30 percent of Games revenues for the full year, however, the amount may vary depending on development of the games' monetization and the level of competition in the market. The cost per acquired user has risen significantly in the market." The company stated in a press release.

Since its start in 2003 by three Helsinki University of Technology students originating from a mobile game development competition students sponsored by Nokia and HP, Rovio which began as "Relude" has grown by a good rate releasing its insanely popular Angry Birds title late 2009 catapulting it to a global phenomenon with over 1 billion downloads in less than 3 years since launch.

The company raised just one round of VC funding taking $42 million in Series A investment 7 years ago from Felicis Ventures, Accel and Atomico.

Airbus Debuts Zero-Carbon Plane Concepts

Aircraft manufacturer Airbus has unveiled three concepts of zero-emission commercial aircraft that it says could enter into use by 2035. The three zero-emission concepts, with a general codename "ZEROe", include a turbofan engine design, a turboprop engine design, and a “blended-wing body” design. The turbofan design is made to fit between 120-200 passengers, the turboprop for up to 100 passengers, and the “blended-wing body” for up to 200 passengers. Airbus is debuting these concepts as part of efforts to tackle environmental pollution, given that planes although necessary for quick and easy global movement are one of the biggest environmental polluters worldwide. WM Motor Bags $1.5 Billion

WM Motor, a Chinese electric vehicle upstart, has said that it's raised 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) in its latest financing round to further its operations. Among investors who provided the new funding include Chinese tech giant Baidu; SIG Ventures, a US-based venture capital firm; SAIC Motor, a Chinese state-owned automobile manufacturer; along with investment firms backed by the Chinese government. Stock trading app Robinhood has bagged yet another round of funding, with the company just having raised $460 million in new funding as an extension to a recently closed $200 million funding round. Hims, a telemedicine upstart, is on the cusp of a deal to go public by merging with blank-check firm Oaktree Acquisition Corp, according to a report [paywall] from Bloomberg, which states that a deal could be announced as early as next week. Technology giant Apple has bought Scout FM, a popular app that creates radio stations for podcast listeners. EU Fights Apple Tax Fine Reversal

The European Commission has said that it'll appeal an Irish tax penalty reversal that was recently granted to Apple after the technology giant won an appeal to a $15 billion tax penalty that was levied against it by the European Union's second-highest court. The tax penalty in concern was levied against Apple in 2016 over allegations that the European nation of Ireland granted selective tax breaks to the company, which maintains its European headquarters in Ireland. That penalty was later appealed by Apple as well as the Irish government, which both came out victorious in July of this year. VW's Traton Partners With TuSimple

The Traton Group, a heavy-duty truck subsidiary of German automaker Volkswagen, has entered into a partership with self-driving trucks upstart TuSimple. Under the terms of the partnership, both parties have launched a development program to operate autonomous trucks in a specified route in the European nation of Sweden. Traton has also purchased a minority stake in TuSimple under the terms of the partnership.The partnership between Traton and TuSimple represents the latter's first in Europe and actually spans several countries. Traton is aiming to test driverless truck fleets powered by TuSimple's technology across countries including Sweden and Germany, with both companies focused on Level 4 automation for their truck fleet.
